🖧 Computer Networks for Beginners
Planning a building network
## Example: a 3-floor school
The school has 3 floors. Each floor has 2 classrooms, and each classroom has 15 computers. There is also a teachers' room and a server room.
### 1. Topology — tree
```
Internet
│
[Router]
│
[Core switch — server room]──[Server]
/ | \
[Floor 1 SW] [Floor 2 SW] [Floor 3 SW]
/ \ ... ...
class1 class2
```
### 2. IP plan — each floor gets its own network
| Part | Network | Gateway | Hosts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Floor 1 | 192.168.10.0/26 | 192.168.10.1 | up to 62 |
| Floor 2 | 192.168.10.64/26 | 192.168.10.65 | up to 62 |
| Floor 3 | 192.168.10.128/26 | 192.168.10.129 | up to 62 |
| Servers | 192.168.10.192/26 | 192.168.10.193 | up to 62 |
With 30 computers per floor, /26 (62 hosts) is enough and leaves room to grow.
### 3. Cables and requirements
- UTP Cat6 cable from every room to the floor switch (no longer than 100 m!).
- Number and label every cable on the **patch panel**.
- Put an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in the server room.
